History & heritage

We stand on the shoulders of giants

Alterra Mountain Company was born out of a shared love of the mountains, a history of blazing trails, and a hunger to be leaders in shaping the future of our industry.

The awarding of the 1960 Winter Olympics spurred the development of Palisades, Tahoe into the world-class ski destination it has been ever since.

Olympian Stein Eriksen helped Edgar and Polly Stern redefine mountain hospitality with the opening of Deer Valley in 1981.

The inaugural 1969 helicopter ski tour led by Hans Moser, founder of Canadian Mountain Holidays (CMH), created a groundbreaking category of adventure travel.

Mike Wiegele, shown here with Warren Miller in 1969, was a pioneer in heliskiing and backcountry guiding.

Jake Burton breathed life into snowboarding at Stratton Mountain in the 1980s.

KSL Capital Partners, owners of Palisades Tahoe (formerly Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows) in California, and Henry Crown & Company acquire Intrawest Resorts, owners of Steamboat and Winter Park in Colorado, Stratton in Vermont, Snowshoe in West Virginia, Blue Mountain in Ontario, Tremblant in Quebec, and CMH Heli-Skiing & Summer Adventures in British Columbia.

We have always believed that by uniting the best of the best under one banner, we could offer unrivaled access to the world’s most iconic peaks and world-class services to create an industry leader with an entirely unique approach.
